Atrium Health continues raising the bar with seventh straight year of recognition by Environmental Protection Agency

CHARLOTTE, N.C., April 4, 2024 – Atrium Health is proud to announce that it has received the “2024 ENERGY STAR® Partner of the Year – Sustained Excellence Award” from the Environmental Protection Agency.

“Being recognized as a national leader in health care energy performance for the seventh year in a row shows true commitment to Atrium Health’s pursuit of operational excellence and environmental stewardship,” said Michael Roberts, director of enterprise energy services at Atrium Health. “To be considered one of the elite health care systems in this area is very exciting. This recognition shows that Atrium Health understands that human health and environmental health are connected and that this is an important part of our mission to improve health, elevate hope and advance healing – for all.”

Atrium Health has a longstanding practice of environmental stewardship and has achieved a 37% energy reduction since 2012 in the Greater Charlotte region. The organization has invested in efficiency projects, such as retro-commissioning – a practice which identifies areas for improved energy efficiencies in existing buildings, lighting retrofits and ventilation control strategies in operating suites. Atrium Health, a part of Advocate Health, will expand on this work and strive to achieve the enterprise goals to be carbon neutral by 2030, and strive for net zero by 2035.

Each year, the Energy Star program honors a select group of businesses and organizations that have made outstanding contributions to energy efficiency and the transition to a clean energy economy. Energy Star award winners lead their industries in the production, sale and adoption of energy-efficient products, homes, buildings, services and strategies. These efforts have saved more than 5 trillion kilowatt-hours of electricity over the past 30 years.

“President Biden’s Investing in America agenda creates unprecedented opportunity to build a clean energy economy, and private sector partners through programs like Energy Star are leading the way,” said EPA Administrator Michael S. Regan. “I congratulate this year’s Energy Star award winners for their innovation and leadership, in delivering cost-effective energy efficient solutions that create jobs, address climate change and contribute to a healthier environment for all.”

Winners are selected from a network of thousands of Energy Star partners. For a complete list of 2024 winners and more information about Energy Star’s awards program, visit EnergyStar.gov.
